75 Convert a Scanned Document into Text

Now that you've converted your scanned document into a PDF file that can be searched and edited, you will need to locate any OCR suspects. OCR suspects are words or characters that Acrobat might not have interpreted correctly during the paper capture process, therefore Acrobat marks them for review. Not all suspects require changing. For example, acronyms and proper names may be marked as suspect, but in fact, they are spelled correctly. If this is the case, you can leave the word as it is and move on to the next suspect.

KEY TERM

OCR suspect Any word or text character that has been flagged by an OCR application as possibly misrecognized. Common culprits are 8s recognized as capital Bs and 0s (zero) or Os (capital O ) recognized as capital Ds.

1.
Find the First OCR Suspect

With your document open , from the Document menu, select Recognize Text Using OCR, Find First OCR Suspect . Acrobat scans through the document and displays the first OCR suspect in the Find Element dialog box. If Acrobat displays a character that is not actual text, click the Not Text button and Acrobat moves on to the next suspect.

If Acrobat's interpretation of the suspect was correct, click the Find Next button. This accepts the word as is and moves on to the next suspect. If the suspect is incorrect, type in the correct spelling of the word in the Suspect text box; then click the Accept and Find button to accept the new spelling and move on to the next suspect. When you are done, click the Close button.

2.
Find All OCR Suspects

Another way of finding OCR suspects in your scanned document is to use the Find All OCR Suspects . This finds all suspects and displays them in the Acrobat window, with suspects outlined in red.

From the Document menu, select Recognize Text, Find All OCR Suspects . Acrobat then scans the document for all OCR suspects. Click one of the red outlined OCR suspects to bring up the Find Element dialog box. Click the Find Next button to move on to the next suspect if you do not need to make any changes.
