2.10 Console Text Viewer

 < Day Day Up >

Another tool available to the LAN administrator is the text viewer, which is used to display and review text files at the console. While working at the console, the LAN administrator might want to review textual information, such as network event or error logs, or Windows configuration files. Rather than exit the console, the LAN administrator can use the text viewer to display the information. If a log is selected for viewing, the console automatically displays the most current log each time it is selected. Using the text viewer, the LAN administrator can perform the following functions:

  • Set automatic display of data: Using the console’s startup file feature, the LAN administrator can set files, such as error logs, to be displayed automatically with the most current data each time the console is run.

  • Display and work with ASCII text files: The LAN administrator can open files created using the DOS redirect command, whereupon a DOS screen display is sent to a file. With this feature, the LAN administrator can, for example, save a directory listing to a file for sorting or adding to other information.

  • Change the font style and size: This allows the LAN administrator to reformat displayed data.

  • Search: The LAN administrator can search for particular text to quickly locate needed information.

  • Print: This allows the LAN administrator to print out the displayed text.
