Wi-Fi is not your only option for connecting your laptop computer to the Internet when you're away from home base. If you have an account with a cellular data service, you can set up a connection anywhere in most major metropolitan areas and transportation corridors. And when you're visiting a friend or another office within your own company, it might be possible to plug a cable into a wired home or office LAN.
