Chapter 15: Securing POP and IMAP

Overview

Automatic simply means that you can’t repair it yourself.

——Unknown

Microsoft Exchange 2000 offers complete support for the Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3, or just POP) and the Internet Message Access Protocol version 4, revision 1 (IMAP4rev1, but generally referred to as IMAP4). These protocols are useful because they provide two Internet-standard, widely implemented methods for mailbox access. IMAP and POP have different capabilities and are implemented as two separate Internet Information Services (IIS) protocol extensions, but for most administrative purposes Exchange lumps them together.
