Identify Requirement Interaction (Process Notes 7.1.3)

Two requirements interact if a design solution to one of them makes it more difficult (or easier) to do anything about the other. Identifying requirement interaction at the specification stage provides input when you evaluate the requirements' risk and estimate the effort needed to satisfy the requirements.

Requirement interactions exist in the following situations:

  • Two functions use some of the same policy.

  • Two functions use some of the same data.

  • Two functions have contradictory measurements.

  • The solution to one requirement has an effect (either negative or positive) on the solution to another requirement.
