5.1 Software User Manual (SUM)

 < Day Day Up >

The SUM is a basic instruction manual intended for the end user. It is written as a fundamental learning tool for the project deliverables. In order to help the user in learning the basic program features, the SUM should list all product entities the user would possibly see in the operation of the product. This includes any keyboard commands and input device controls. The SUM should instruct the user on printing and viewing system reports, customizing the application, and performing troubleshooting actions.

The SUM should be the first point of reference for a user and should be comprehensive enough to prevent the user from needing to pick up the phone and call for support. Taking the time to prepare a SUM properly will ultimately save the organization in support costs and, in many instances, provide a higher degree of satisfaction for users.
