Xinjiang, situated on the north-western border of China, covers a sixth of the country's total area and is the largest region in China. It extends 2,000 kilometres from east to west and 1,500 kilometres from north to south. It has a 5,000 kilometre common border with the former Soviet Union, the People's Republic of Mongolia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. The region has many mountains , averaging 3,000 metres above sea level. Its total area is 1.65 million square kilometres and the population is 18.76 million. There are 13 nationalities in Xinjiang, of which the Uygur nationality is the largest ethnic group , accounting for 47 per cent of the population. The regional capital is Urumqi.
