The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is situated in the northern part of north-western China, covering the middle and upper reaches of the Yellow River. The land ranges from south to north with an elevation of over 1,000 metres above sea level. The total area is 66,400 square kilometres and the population is 5.6 million. The Hui ethnic group accounts for a third of the region's total population. The region's capital is Yinchuan. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.30.1.
