Remember that remote administration is vulnerable to eavesdropping. You should evaluate the encryption capabilities of the remote management tools. If the tools do not support encryption, you will need to come up with a method to encrypt the data being sent to and from the server with management tools. This is especially important if you are managing the server over the Internet.
Know that MMC is not a management tool in itself. MMC is a shell or framework that provides a common environment for management tools called snap-ins. Snap-ins can vary greatly in the features they support, so you will want to verify their security features, such as encryption, authentication, and remote management capability.
Understand what Remote Desktop for Administration does. Remote Desktop for Administration provides a graphical user interface for managing a server. It also provides for encrypting network traffic through the RDP configuration.
Remember that Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop are built upon the same technology but provide different functions. You use Remote Assistance to provide assistance to users on the network without having to visit the desktop.
Understand that Telnet provides command-line remote administration but it contains no security mechanisms. You will need to either provide encryption externally to the tool or use the secure form of a remote shell called Secure Shell (SSH).
Know that EMS allows you to perform out-of-band management of your servers. This means that you will have the ability to manage your server even if it is not responding to in-band management tools.
