Like most applications on your BlackBerry device, the Phone application is customizable, which means you can fine-tune the phone's functionality to suit your own particular needs. You can control several subtle phone behaviors by tweaking the general phone options, such as whether the phone ever auto-answers calls and whether it auto-ends calls when you put your device in the holster. You can also restrict your identity so your phone number doesn't appear in the caller ID of phones you call. If you're really guarded about your privacy, you can even change a setting so your phone number doesn't even appear on your own device. Other handy options include changing the default call log list on the Phone screen so it displays the most commonly dialed numbers in the order of how frequently they are dialed.

1.
Open the Phone Screen

Scroll to the Phone icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Phone screen appears, displaying a dialing area and a list of recently made and received phone calls.

TIP

You can quickly jump to the Phone screen from any location on your phone by simply pressing the Send key.

2.
Open the Phone Options Screen

Click the trackwheel to open the Phone menu, select Options from the menu, and click again. The Phone Options screen appears and provides access to a variety of phone options.

3.
Configure General Options

To configure general phone options, select General Options on the Phone Options screen and click the trackwheel. The General Options screen appears, providing access to several general phone options.

The first option on the General Options screen is Auto Answer Calls , which causes the device to automatically answer a call when the phone is out of its holster. Because I like to see who is calling before answering, I personally am not a big fan of enabling this option. So, I always set it to Never . However, I'm a huge fan of the next option, Auto End Calls , which automatically ends a call when you place the device in the holster. I set this second option to Into Holster . I've found that enabling this option is extremely important to ensure that calls are ended when I place my device in the holster. Otherwise, I might put the device in the holster without pressing the End button and inadvertently stay on a call.

The Confirm Delete option is used to keep you from deleting call logs without a confirmation. If you want to be able to delete call logs without a confirmation, set this option to No . Keeping it set to the default value of Yes is the safer setting because it ensures that you won't inadvertently delete a call log by accidentally hitting the wrong key.

Speaking of safe settings, the Restrict My Identity option is used to keep you anonymous on the caller ID of phones you call. This option is truly a personal option and depends on how guarded you are about people knowing you are calling. I generally don't mind people knowing I'm calling, so I leave the option set to No on my device. An even more guarded option is the Show My Number option, which determines whether your phone number is displayed on your device (on the main Phone screen). If you have a reason for keeping your phone number ultraprivate, you might want to set this option to No . Of course, your phone number is still accessible by viewing the SIM Card settings (see 88 Secure the SIM Card) .

The Phone List View option is one of the most useful options on the General Options screen. It determines what kind of call information is displayed in the list on the main Phone screen. By default, the Phone List View option is set to Call Log , which results in the call log list being displayed. Although this view is certainly useful for seeing the exact history of recent calls, you might prefer to set it to Most Used so you can easily access commonly dialed numbers. Other possible settings include Most Recent and Name , which you might also find useful depending on how you plan to use the main phone list. In the case of the Name setting, the names of people you have called or received calls from are listed in alphabetical order; numbers that don't have names associated with them are listed in numerical order after the names .

TIP

The Most Used setting for the Phone List View option isn't important if you've set up commonly dialed numbers in the speed dial list. See 58 Manage the Speed Dial List to find out how to quickly access numbers you use often.

The last option on the General Options screen is Default Call Volume , which determines the default volume of calls. Although you can set this value to a specific percentage of the maximum volumeincluding 25%, 50%, 75% , and 100% the default value of Previous proves to be the most valuable option by far. This default option results in the phone adopting the volume of the previous call (which you set using the trackwheel as the volume control knob). The Previous setting is ideal because you might need to adjust the volume based on your surroundings, connection quality, and so on.

After tweaking the general phone options, press the Escape button to return to the Phone Options screen. If you've made changes, a confirmation pop-up window appearsselect Save to confirm the changes and then click the trackwheel.

4.
Configure Voice Mail Options

To access voice mail options, select Voicemail on the Phone Options screen and click the trackwheel. The Voicemail screen appears, providing access to a couple settings where you can change the voice mail phone number and any other numbers required to access your voice mail.

The first option on the Voicemail screen, Access Number , contains the phone number used to access your voice mail service. This number is likely already set correctly on your device by your wireless service provider, but if you have to change it, you can do so through the Access Number option. The second voice mail option, Additional Numbers , is one you're more likely to change because it enables you to enter additional numbers that are required to access your voice mail. Whatever you enter in this option is dialed after you connect to your voice mail number, so it is ideally suited for specifying a special extension or password, if required.

TIP

By default, the 1 key on speed dial is set to dial your voice mail number. To access your voice mail, just hold down the 1 key from the Home screen or the Phone application.

After tweaking the voice mail options, press the Escape button to return to the Phone Options screen. If you've made changes, a confirmation pop-up window appearsselect Save to confirm the changes and then click the trackwheel.

5.
Enable and Disable Call Waiting

To enable/disable call waiting, select Call Waiting on the Phone Options screen and click the trackwheel. The Call Waiting screen appears.

By default, call waiting is likely enabled on your device, which means you are notified when a new call comes in and you are already connected to a call. If you don't want to be notified of new calls while you are on a call, set the Call Waiting Enabled option to No . Unless you have a serious aversion to call waiting, it's probably a good idea to leave this option set to Yes so you can use the call waiting feature.

Press the Escape button to return to the Phone Options screen. If you've made changes to call waiting, a confirmation pop-up window appearsselect Save to confirm the changes and then click the trackwheel.

6.
Exit Phone Options

Press the Escape button to exit the Phone Options screen. Press the Escape button again to navigate back to the Home screen, or just press the End key.
