Just as your web browser maintains a history of all the sites you've visited, your BlackBerry device maintains a list of all the phone calls you've made and received. Not only does this call history provide a useful way to keep close tabs on your phone habits and mobile communications, it can also serve as a constantly changing speed dial list. Additionally, you can use the call history to access the contact associated with a phone number.

The call history to which I'm referring is actually a list of call logs . Each unique phone number is given its own call log, which is a history of the calls made to or received from that particular number. By default, all calls are logged, so you can go back and see exactly when you last talked to a person at a certain number. In addition, you can also look at other calls made to or received from that same number, along with how long the calls lasted. You can even write text notes and assign them to individual calls in a call log.

In some ways, you can think of the call logs on your device as keeping up with your phone activity a bit too well. Just keep in mind that you can easily delete call logs if you want to get rid of the remnants of your recent mobile conversations.

1.
Open the Phone Screen

Scroll to the Phone icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Phone screen appears, displaying a dialing area and a list of recently made and received phone calls (call logs).

TIP

You can quickly jump to the Phone screen from any location on your phone by simply pressing the Send key.

2.
Open a Call Log

The lower portion of the Phone screen consists of a list of calls that were made, received, or missed. This list of calls is really a list of call logs. Notice that no number appears more than once in the call log list because all the calls associated with that number are accessed by opening the call log for the number. To open a call log, scroll the trackwheel to select a number, click, and select Open from the menu that appears. Click once more, and the call log for the selected number is displayed.

3.
View Calls in the Call Log

The Call Log screen shows all the calls made to or received from a specific number, along with the date, time, and length of each call. You can tell whether a call was made to or received from the number by the little arrow icon that appears to the left of the entry in the call log; a left arrow means you called them, a right arrow means they called you, and two little phone receivers means it was a conference call. Unanswered calls are shown with an arrow that turns upward from left to right. Conference call logs list all the people who participated in a call.

4.
Add Notes to a Call

The call log feature on your BlackBerry device allows you to add notes to each call in a call log. This feature can be useful if you need to make notes related to a particular call for later reference. To add notes to a call in the call log, scroll the trackwheel to select the call, click, and select Add Notes from the menu that appears. Click once more to open the Notes screen, which allows you to enter text notes about the call. When you finish entering the notes, click the trackwheel, select Save from the menu, and click again. A small note icon appears next to the call in the call log to indicate that it has a note attached to it. To open the note for viewing or editing, click the trackwheel, select Edit Notes from the menu, and click again.

TIP

To delete a note that is attached to a call log, just edit the note and delete all its text.

5.
Delete a Call Log

You can easily erase the call history for a particular phone number by deleting the call log for that number. You cannot delete individual calls within a call log, however. To delete an entire call log, first return to the main Phone screen by pressing the Escape button. Then scroll the trackwheel to select the call log in the Phone screen (the main call log list), click, select Delete from the menu that appears, and click once more. You are presented with a confirmation dialog box; click Delete to follow through with the call log deletion or click Cancel if you change your mind.

6.
Configure the Call Logging Message Option

An important call logging option relates to how calls are shown in the Messages application. You can use this option to have calls displayed alongside your email and other text messages in the main message list. This feature is particularly handy for viewing missed calls without having to open the Phone application.

To configure call logging options, click the trackwheel to open the Phone menu, select Options from the menu, and click again. The Phone Options screen appears and provides access to a variety of phone options. Select Call Logging on the Phone Options screen and click the trackwheel. The Call Logging screen appears, providing access to the call logging message option.

The only option on this screen allows you to determine whether calls are displayed in the main message list. The following settings are available to control the calls that are displayed: Missed Calls, All Calls , and None . The first option, Missed Calls , results in only missed calls appearing in the message list (it's the most useful option in my opinion). The All Calls option results in all calls being displayed in the message list (it can be a bit overwhelming when call logs begin to eclipse your text messages). The last option prevents any calls from being shown in the text message list (which is a viable option if you aren't as concerned about keeping track of every missed call). The benefit to including calls in the message list is that they appear right there alongside your messages. From the message list, you can quickly return a call by selecting the call, clicking the trackwheel, and clicking Call Name on the menu that appears.

NOTE

Keep in mind that call logs are still readily available in the Phone application's call log list, regardless of how you set the call logging message option.

After setting the call logging option, press the Escape button to return to the Phone Options screen. If you've made changes, a confirmation pop-up window appearsselect Save to confirm the changes and then click the trackwheel. Press Escape again to return to the main Phone screen.

7.
Exit the Phone

Press the Escape button to exit the Phone application and return to the Home screen, or just press the End key.
