Even if you aren't the type to watch home decorating shows, you might still dream of a BlackBerry device makeover beyond the limited set of default wallpaper images included on your device. Fortunately, you can easily download new wallpaper images and install them onto your device. Unfortunately, however, you have to perform this process through a website by downloading images from a link to your devicethere is currently no way to directly transfer an image from your desktop PC to your device. So, if you have an image you want to use as wallpaper on your device, you have to host it online somewhere and open the link through the browser on your device. You learn a trick for making image hosting a bit easier as you work through this task.

51. Download New Wallpaper

Before getting into the steps for downloading new wallpaper, it's worth pointing out the physical dimensions of the BlackBerry screen and desktop area in case you're thinking about creating your own custom wallpaper. As you might already know, the BlackBerry 7100 screen is 240 pixels wide and 260 pixels tall. However, a standard title area along the top of the Home screen takes up a lot of space. Specifically, the title area is 75 pixels in height, which reduces the visible wall paper area to 185 pixels in height. However, some themes (such as the standard T-Mobile theme) allow the wallpaper to show through just a bit on the right and left sides of the lower part of the title area. If you want the wallpaper to extend up and be visible on these sides, tack on 10 pixels to the height, making the final target size for BlackBerry 7100 wallpaper 240 x 195.

1.
Open the BlackBerry Web Browser

Scroll to the Browser icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Bookmarks screen appears, displaying a list of websites you can visit using the BlackBerry web browser.

TIP

The Convenience key on your device also serves as a shortcut to the Bookmarks screen. The Convenience key is the large key on the top of the keyboard between the Send and End keys.

2.
Navigate to the Wallpaper Web Page

Your device might already include bookmarks for wallpaper you can purchase and downloador possibly download free. If so, I encourage you to follow one of these links to a web page that contains wallpaper images. As an example, T-Mobile users have access to a bookmark called Download Fun that includes links to categorized wallpaper images. I created and uploaded my own custom wallpaper image to a hosting site where I could download it to my device. Regardless of where you go to find wallpaper images, you use the browser on your device to follow a link and open a page with one or more images.

WEB RESOURCE

http://www.comfx.com/g.php

A website called ComFX offers a free image-hosting service for BlackBerry wallpaper that is extremely handy. The service allows you to upload an image from your desktop PC; the site then provides you with a link to the image you can visit using your BlackBerry device. The image hosting is temporary (images are cleared off weekly), but you have to access an image only once with your device to download it and use it for wallpaper. Follow the instructions on the ComFX website and then use the URL they provide to go to the page containing your newly uploaded image.

3.
Follow the Link to Open the Wallpaper Image

If you're following a link directly to an image, the image opens immediately in the browser. Otherwise, you might have to navigate through a list of images, select the image you want, and click the trackwheel. Then select Get Link from the menu that appears, and click again. The image downloads and opens in the browser.

4.
Save the Wallpaper Image

With the wallpaper image open and in view in the browser, you're ready to save it to your device so you can select it as wallpaper. Click the trackwheel and scroll to select Save Image from the menu that appears. Click once more, and you are prompted to enter a name for the image. Be sure you enter an appropriate image name with the correct file extension ( .gif for GIF images or .jpg for JPEG images); a sufficient image name might be automatically provided for you. When you finish entering the image name, click the Save button to finish and save the image.

5.
Change the Wallpaper on Your Device

To change the wallpaper on your device, you must first close or hide the browser by pressing the End key. Next scroll to the Applications icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. Then scroll to the Photo Album application icon and click the trackwheel. The Photo Album appears with a list of pictures and their thumbnails. Scroll the trackwheel through the list of pictures, and click the picture you downloaded. In the menu that appears, scroll to Set As Home Screen Image and click to set the picture as the wallpaper.

NOTE

For a more detailed explanation of how to set the wallpaper on your device, see 21 Change the Wallpaper .

6.
View the New Wallpaper

With your wallpaper successfully changed, you're ready to view it in all its splendor. Press the End key to immediately jump back to the Home screen where the wallpaper is clearly visible in the background behind the icons.
