20. Organize Application Icons

You might have assumed that the layout of application icons in the BlackBerry user interface is set in stone. But like much of the BlackBerry 7100 experience, application icons can be altered to achieve a customized look and feel. More specifically , you can rearrange and even hide icons as you see fit, which is a good idea because there might be applications you never use. I encourage you to move the icons of the most frequently used applications to the top of the screen so they are more accessible and then hide any icons of applications you don't use. You can always go back and rearrange or unhide icons later if you change your mind.

1.
Activate the Application Menu

Scroll the trackwheel to select an icon from a screen that displays application icons, such as the Home screen. Open the application menu by pressing the Alt key and then clicking the trackwheel. The application menu appears and provides commands for moving and hiding applications.

2.
Move an Application Icon

Scroll the trackwheel to select Move Application from the application menu, and click. The selected application is now highlighted. Scroll the trackwheel to move the application icon around among the other icons on the screen. When you're satisfied with the application's new position, click the trackwheel.

Although moving application icons is handy, a more aggressive , and often more useful, technique involves hiding application icons. To hide an icon, press the Alt key and click the trackwheel to display the application menu again.

3.
Hide an Application Icon

Scroll to select Hide Application from the application menu, and click. The selected application icon disappears from view. Hiding an application icon in this manner is useful if there is an application you never use. It's never a bad idea to remove clutter and streamline the BlackBerry user interface to suit your exact needs.

But what happens if you change your mind and need to show an application icon you've hidden? No problem. Just open the application menu by pressing the Alt key and then clicking the trackwheel. The application menu appears and now includes a command for showing all application icons, both visible and hidden. Scroll to select Show All from the application menu, and click. The hidden application icon appears with an X over it to indicate that it is actually hidden.

4.
Show an Application Icon

With the hidden application icon selected, open the application menu again by pressing the Alt key and then clicking the trackwheel. You'll notice that the Hide Application option is checked to indicate that the application is hidden. Scroll to select Hide Application from the menu, and click. The X is removed from the selected application to indicate that it is no longer hidden from view.

Now all you have left to do is turn off the Show All option to return to the normal application view. Open the application menu once more by pressing the Alt key and then clicking the trackwheel. Scroll to select Show All from the menu, and click.
