4. Make Yourself the Owner

As the proud owner of a BlackBerry 7100 series device, it's important that you take ownership of your device. More specifically , I'm referring to you entering your name and any relevant personal information so that your device is associated with you . This information is important because it is displayed on the Home screen when you lock the device. You will typically lock your device to prevent accidental key presses from having any effect, to protect the device from others, or both. See 5 Lock and Unlock Your Device .

1.
Open the Tools Screen

Scroll to the Tools icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Tools screen opens.

TIP

To immediately jump to the Home screen from any other screen, press the End key.

2.
Open the Settings Screen

Scroll to the Settings icon and click the trackwheel. A list of options for which you can change the settings appears.

3.
Open the Owner Screen

Scroll to the Owner option in the list and click the trackwheel. The Owner screen opens.

4.
Enter Your Name

Using the keyboard, enter your name as you'd like it to appear on the device when the device is locked. With SureType, all you have to do is press the key corresponding to each letter of your name and the device will figure out the rest. If you want, you can switch to multitap input mode instead by holding down the Next key for a second or so. Press the Enter key when you're finished entering your name.

TIP

If you have trouble entering your name with SureType, hold down the Next key (the key with the asterisk on it) for about a second to switch to multitap input mode. With multitap input mode enabled, press each key multiple times to access the different letters . Hold down the Next key again for a second or so to switch back to SureType input mode.

KEY TERM

Multitap A popular handheld input mode in which keys are pressed multiple times to access the additional letters, numbers , and symbols printed on the face of the key. You switch from SureType mode to multitap mode by holding down the Next key for about a second. As an example, to access the letter r , hold down the Next key for a second to switch to multitap mode, and then tap the E R key twice: The first tap displays the letter e , and the second tap displays the letter r . You may briefly hold down the key to convert the letter to uppercase. To access the number 1 , you must press the Shift key before pressing the E R key.

5.
Enter Your Information

Using the keyboard, enter any additional information you'd like to be visible below your name when your device is locked.

TIP

The Information field is a great place to include your home or office phone number, your mailing address, or some other information about how to get in touch with you should someone find your device if it gets lost. If you prefer to be a bit more private with personal information, just list a home or work email address. To learn more about BlackBerry loss prevention, see 94 Register Your Device with StuffBak .

6.
Exit and Save Changes

Press the Escape button to exit the Owner screen. When prompted to save or discard changes, scroll the trackwheel to Save and click to save the changes.
