3. Set the Date and Time

Just about everything you do with your BlackBerry is dependent on the date and time. Phone calls, emails, and text messages all carry a time stamp that is important in establishing the context of a communication. The BlackBerry 7100 series devices allow you to directly set the date, time, time zone, and time format. You can also elect to allow the device to automatically retrieve the date and time from the wireless network or from your desktop computer when it's synchronizing data.

When getting started with your device, you'll probably want to directly set the date and time. From then on, you might choose to let it automatically update from the network or from your desktop computer.

Open the Tools Screen

Scroll to the Tools icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Tools screen opens.

TIP

To immediately jump to the Home screen from any other screen, press the End key. Optionally, you can press the Escape button repeatedly to navigate backward through the user interface to return to the Home screen.

Open the Settings Screen

Scroll to the Settings icon and click the trackwheel. A list of options for which you can change the settings appears.

Open the Date/Time Screen

Scroll to the Date/Time option in the list, and click the trackwheel. The Date/Time screen opens.

Select Your Time Zone

Use the trackwheel to highlight the text in the Time Zone fieldin this example, select the text Central Time (6) and click the trackwheel. Then click Change Option in the menu that appears. A list of alternative time zones appears. Scroll through the list of options to select the desired time zone and click the trackwheel to select that option.

TIP

To quickly change an option without having to go through the two trackwheel clicks required to open a menu and select Change Option , highlight the option and press the Alt key to view a list of choices. Then scroll to the desired choice and click the trackwheel to select it. An even faster shortcut involves cycling to the next available choice by pressing the Space key; pressing Shift + Space cycles to the previous choice.

Set the Time

Scroll to highlight the hour portion of the time in the Time fieldin this example, select 8 and click the trackwheel. Then click Change Option in the menu that appears. Scroll the trackwheel to select the desired hour and click.

Scroll to highlight the minute portion of the time in the Time fieldin this example, select 05 and click the trackwheel. Then click Change Option in the menu that appears. Scroll the trackwheel to select the desired minutes and click.

Scroll to highlight the AM/PM portion of the time in the Time field and click the trackwheel; then click Change Option in the menu that appears. Scroll to select either AM or PM and click.

Set the Time Format

Scroll to highlight the text in the Time Format fieldin this example, select 12 hour and click the trackwheel. Then click Change Option in the menu that appears. From the next menu, select either 12 hour (to see time displayed as 1:00 AM and 1:00 PM ) or 24 hour (to see time displayed as 01:00 and 13:00 ) and click.

NOTE

The 24 hour time format is handy if you're accustomed to military time, which is officially known as Universal Military Time (UMT). According to UMT, the hours of the day are listed from 0 to 24 with no notion of a.m. or p.m.; actually, 0 and 24 are equivalent (midnight) in UMT.

Set the Date

Scroll to highlight the month portion of the date in the Date fieldin this example, select Dec and click the trackwheel. Then click Change Option in the menu that appears. Scroll to select the month and click.

Repeat this step to select and set the day and year portions of the date.

NOTE

You don't have the option to set the day of the weekit is automatically selected based on the date you set.

Enable the Automatic Time Set Feature

If the automatic time set feature isn't already enabled, scroll to select the Auto Time Set field and click the trackwheel. Then click Change Option . From the menu that appears, select Enabled to allow your BlackBerry unit to retrieve the current local time and date from your service provider or the wireless network to which you are connected; select Disabled to force the device to use only the time and date you have specified on this screen.

Exit and Save Changes

Press the Escape button to exit the Date/Time screen. When prompted to save or discard your changes, scroll the trackwheel to Save and click to save the changes.
