Categories are used throughout the BlackBerry personal information management system to help you organize address book contacts, tasks, and memos. Within the Tasks application, you use categories to identify and distinguish between tasks. You can then use categories to filter the main task list according to a certain category. The Tasks application provides the capability to create new categories, delete existing categories, and assign categories to tasks.

1.
Open the Applications Screen

Scroll to the Applications icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Applications screen appears, displaying a list of applications, including the Tasks application.

2.
Launch the Tasks Application

Scroll to the Tasks icon and click the trackwheel. The Tasks application is launched and displayed on the screen.

3.
Open the Select Category Screen

Click the trackwheel and scroll to select Filter from the menu that appears. Click once more to open the Select Category screen, which shows a list of categories from which you can select.

4.
Create and Delete Categories

Before selecting a category or categories for the task, you might want to create a few new categories or delete an existing one. To create a new category, click the trackwheel, select New from the menu that appears, and click again. A dialog box appears that prompts you for the name of the category. Enter the name and click the trackwheel to create the new category.

NOTE

Although category names can be mixed case, they aren't distinguishable by case. In other words, you aren't allowed to have two categories named Business and BUSINESS ; they are considered duplicate categories.

To delete a category, just scroll the trackwheel to select the category in the category list, click, select Delete from the menu that appears, and click again. You are prompted to confirm the category deletionclick Delete to follow through with the deletion or Cancel to cancel the deletion.

NOTES

If you delete a category that is already assigned to a task, the category is removed from the task but the task itself is not deleted.

Categories don't just apply to tasks. They are shared between address book contacts, tasks, and memos. When you add or delete a category from within the Tasks application, you are changing the categories for contacts, tasks, and memos as well.

When you finish creating and deleting categories, you can use the Select Category screen to filter tasks so that only the tasks assigned to a particular category are shown in the task list.

5.
Select the Categories for Filtering

By default, the task list shown in the Tasks application lists all the tasks you've created, regardless of how they are categorized. A useful technique for isolating tasks in a smaller view is to filter the task list based on categories. For example, if you select a category for filtering, only the tasks set to that category are displayed in the task list.

To filter the task list from the Select Category screen, scroll to select a category and double-click the trackwheel. You immediately return to the task list, which now has a heading above the tasks that shows on which category the tasks are being filtered. In the example, I'm filtering tasks based on the Personal category so only personal tasks are displayed in the task list.

6.
View All the Tasks Again

To restore the full list of tasks, click the trackwheel, select Filter from the menu that appears, and click again. In the Select Category screen, double-click the selected category to deselect it; the main task list appears with all the tasks again in view.
