Moving Summary Tasks

graphics/note_icon.jpg

I don't understand how to move summary tasks without moving their subtasks . What do I need to do?

First, outdent the subtasks so that the summary task becomes a regular task. Then you can move, copy, cut, delete, promote, or demote the task without affecting its former subtasks.

Preserving Edited Custom WBS Codes

After I customize my summary task WBS codes, they seem to disappear when I have Project renumber tasks. What am I doing wrong?

If you have edited custom WBS codes for summary tasks and then want Project to renumber the tasks, your edited changes are lost unless you take the following steps:

  1. Choose Tools, Options to display the Options dialog box and select the View tab.

  2. Clear the Show Summary Tasks check box and click OK to close the dialog box. Only normal and milestone tasks are then displayed.

  3. Select one of the column headings to select all displayed tasks.

  4. Select Project, WBS, Renumber to display the WBS Renumber dialog box.

  5. Click the Selected Tasks button (instead of Entire Project).

  6. Click OK to start the renumbering process.

  7. Restore the display of summary tasks by choosing Tools, Options and filling the Show Summary Tasks check box on the View tab. Then click OK to close the dialog box. You can click any cell to deselect all tasks.

The entire task list is displayed again. The summary tasks have not lost their edited codes, but all other tasks are renumbered based on their current order in the outline.
