Recording Wet

 <  Day Day Up  >

We've been working on this recording session for a while, and it looks like we're done. No, wait, what's that? The guitar player wants to add an acoustic guitar track. That's easy enough, right? Well, he also wants to record the guitar wet using a chorus effect, but he doesn't have a chorus pedal. The VS has a number of internal chorus effects, so we'll use one of them and record the acoustic guitar wet.

Wet or Dry?

When you record wet, you can't go back and remove the effect if it's not to your liking. Because of this, I'm a fan of recording dry whenever possible. However, there are times when you might want to record wet. If you know you want to use a number of different effects during mixdown , you can save some time by recording wet. You might also record wet if you are using one of the guitar amp simulator effects and know that you want a particular type of guitar sound recorded.

One trick when recording wet is to record the dry signal to one recording track and the wet signal to a different recording track. That way, if you later decide that the wet track isn't what you wanted, you still have the dry track, and you can apply effects to that dry track during mixdown.

Let's set up the necessary routing and track parameters to record this acoustic guitar track to recording track 6-4. Since we used EFFECT1 for our reverb, let's use EFFECT2 for our chorus effect. Press the EFFECT button a few times until you see FX? EFFECT-2 PRM? and then press the YES button. Use the jogwheel to select A71 =CH:Lt Chorus and then press the YES button. Chorus effects are normally used as insert effects, so let's set up the effect this way. To do this, we need to insert the effect into the Input Mixer. By inserting the effect in the Input Mixer, the effect gets applied before the signal is recorded. If we mistakenly inserted the effect in the Track Mixer, we'd hear the effect, but it wouldn't be recorded.

In the Input Mixer, bring up the track parameters for track 1 and use the and buttons until you see IN1 FX2 Ins = Off. Use the jogwheel to set the value to Insert and then press the FADER[EDIT] button to return to the Play Condition. Now when you record the acoustic guitar track, it will be recorded wet with the chorus effect. Figure 4.11 shows our track sheet now that weve recorded all these tracks.
