TIP 42: Creating Links

Probably the most fundamental feature of a Web page is a hyperlink, often simply called a link. Hyperlinks can be created for both text and images, and GoLive offers a number of ways to create links. Let's start with text links.

To make a link out of text, first select the text and then do one of the following:

  • Type the URL into the Link field of the Inspector palette.

  • Use the Fetch URL tool in the Inspector palette and point and shoot at a page in your files list or at the Page Properties icon (see Tip 30) of another open page. When the page icon is highlighted, release the mouse button and you'll have created linked text (Figure 42a).

  • Click the Browse button at the right end of the link field and navigate to a document. Select the document to create the link.

    Linking to the Site Window

If you've ever wanted to create a link but can't see your files list because the Site window is behind the other pages, try this: Use the Fetch URL tool and point to the Select Window icon in the toolbar. The Site window will pop to the front, and then you can finish your link. This trick works equally well for popping open folders in the files list or for bringing forward tabs in the Site window.

  • Choose a file from the list in the pull-down menu at the right end of the link field to select from recently used files (Figure 42b).

  • Hold down the Command key (Mac) or the Control key (Windows) and point and shoot directly from the selected text to a file in the Files tab of the Site window.

  • Drag and drop a file from the Site window on top of the selection.

Creating links from a selected image can be done the first three of the four ways listed above. Just remember to click the Link tab of the Inspector before making the link.

Yet another method of linking to a document is dragging and dropping a file from the Site window into an opened page. This automatically creates a link to that page using the filename as the link text. (The exception is PDFtake a look at Tip 153 to see what happens there!)
