Managing a telecommunications network is a complex task. Telecom service providers procure telecom equipment from different vendors, and each piece of equipment uses proprietary architecture. Even for managing the equipment, proprietary protocols are used. Multivendor, multiplatform network management is very important to provide reliable services as well as to reduce overhead in telecom network management.
A telecommunications management network (TMN) provides a framework for achieving this goal—to efficiently manage multivendor complex networks. ITU-T (International Telecommunications Union Telecommunications Services Sector) defined TMN in its M.3000 series of recommendations. When telecom equipment manufacturers implement these standard protocols in their network elements, it will be very easy to manage network elements. In this chapter, we will study the architecture of TMN.
