Pagers can be divided into the following categories:
Beep pager: This type of pager gives only a small beep when someone tries to contact the subscriber. This is a very low-cost pager, and the bandwidth occupied will be much less. Hence, for a given frequency, a large number of pagers can be supported.
Pagers can be divided into beep pagers, numeric pagers, alphanumeric pagers, and voice pagers.
Numeric pager: Numeric pager displays only numeric data (such as a telephone number). The bandwidth requirement will be low in this case also, but more than the bandwidth required for beep pagers.
Alphanumeric pager: An alphanumeric pager displays alphanumeric text and so is more useful because normal text messages can be sent to the pager. However, the bandwidth requirement will be higher.
Voice pager: In paging systems that support voice paging, voice messages can be transmitted. The voice will be replayed at the pager. The bandwidth requirement will be the highest for supporting this service.
