Designing for Small Organizations ”Company123

Small businesses account for a large portion of the install base for Exchange. Consequently, a great deal of work went into creating a more cost-effective Exchange model that works for smaller organizations. In addition to the advanced feature set of Exchange 2000, Exchange Server 2003 offers more opportunities to scale the implementation to fit the size of the organization deploying it.

The example of a small organization, for the purposes of this chapter, is Company123. Company123 is the manufacturer of a line of boutique microfiber towels and distributes its product through various resellers . Company123 has 13 employees in its San Francisco headquarters and another 3 in an office in London. As part of a messaging deployment for Company123, the decision was made to deploy Exchange Server 2003. The specific design decisions reached by Company123 are detailed in later sections.
