Setting Focus in a Form
Forms are everywhere on the Web; they push development to a higher level, which includes the beginning of interaction with the client or end user. Forms allow the end user to send information, whether it is a registration form, a request to be on a mailing list, or an online order. Forms are the backbone for moving data from a client machine to a server. Forms can get more involved when you're dealing with secure transactions or sending data to a database; these concepts mark a more advanced level of Web production called Web application development. Developing Web applications with a variety of middleware is covered in several chapters in this book. If this topic sparks an interest, check out Part IV and Part V of this book. If you haven't dealt with database-driven Web sites before, I urge you to read each chapter in these sections because they provide a solid foundation for these more advanced topics. For now however, we'll keep it on the easier side, but I will discuss interaction with a Web server because ultimately you're going to want to retrieve the data that the end user submits through the form.
