Chapter 4. Dreamweaver MX Essentials
Dreamweaver MX is the industry standard for creating and managing Web sites. One thing I always point out to students in my Dreamweaver classes is that Dreamweaver is an HTML editor. Dreamweaver writes HTML when you work in a visual way, much like print designers. The great thing is that Dreamweaver is doing all the coding for you in the background. It is important to remember that any limitations that you have in HTML, you'll also have in Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver does not offer any special code; it is 100% compliant with the guidelines established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C.com).
Now with the release of Dreamweaver MX, the stakes are a bit higher, in the sense that Dreamweaver's capabilities are more powerful and abundant. Dreamweaver is no longer just an HTML editor; it also offers a WYSIWYG Web application development experience. The application offers a very robust coding environment for hand coding HTML, JavaScript, ColdFusion, or any other language associated with the Web.
This chapter specifically looks at the details associated with the HTML editing capabilities of Dreamweaver MX. Of course, later in this book we dive into database-driven Web applications. For now, I just want to look at the coding environment for HTML as well as some of the basic features of the WYSIWYG HTML editing environment.
