Viewing a Subset of the Entire Site

As your site becomes larger and more complex, the site map might become too big to see in the Files panel. You can refine the view to show just a selected page and its links.

1.

In the Files panel site map, select the index.html page inside the about folder.

Viewing the index.html document from the about folder as a subset will let you focus on any pages that can be accessed with about/index.html as the starting pointthis can be helpful if you have a large site.

2.

From the Files panel menu (Windows) or through the Options menu on the right top side of the Files panel (Macintosh), choose View > Site Map Options > View as Root.

Tip

Alternatively, you can set the View as Root option by right-clicking or Control-clicking the file to access the context menu from which you can choose the View As Root option.

The site map changes to show the about/index.html page as the root (the top level of the map view) along with its links (the second level). Below the Files toolbar is a gray bar displaying the hierarchy of the site, beginning with the file you set as the home page and ending with the file that you chose to view as the root of the site. In this exercise, you should see index.html > index.html. You might see a red arrow just after the index.html file on this bar if there is not enough room to display the full file path.

Note

This structural site navigation works the same way as breadcrumb navigation, which is used on many sites. Breadcrumbs show the visitor the hierarchical path from the main page of the site to the page they are on. They usually appear near the top of the page. Each part of the site listed in the breadcrumb path is normally linked to that section. For example, the breadcrumb navigation for the anusara.html page in the about folder would be Main > About > Anusara. In this example, the text Main would be linked to the top-level index.html page, and About would be the index.html file in the about folder, which is linked to the anusara.html page. Anusara is not linkedit is at the end of the breadcrumbs, which indicates to the visitor that the page being viewed is the Anusara page.

3.

Click the Dreamweaver file icon to the left of the first index.html listed on the Site Navigation bar.

The site root is returned to your home pagethe top-level index.html page in the Yoga Sangha project site.
