Attaching Files

Attaching files is handled by the Attach a File as a Comment tool. You can attach any kind of document file to a PDF file. To use the Attach a File as a Comment tool, you need to open an Adobe Reader file enabled with usage rights.

Use the eSupport.pdf or draftlayout.pdf file located at www.peachpit.com/adobereader7.

To attach files to a PDF document:

1.	Open a document enabled with usage rights for Adobe Reader.
2.	On the Commenting toolbar, click the Attach a File as a Comment tool (Figure 13.10). Figure 13.10. The Attach a File as a Comment tool.
3.	Click on a document page where you want the Comment icon to appear. The Add Attachment dialog opens. Navigate your hard drive to locate a file.
4.	Select the file to attach to the PDF, and click the Select button in the Add Attachment dialog. The file is attached and the File Attachment Properties dialog opens (Figure 13.11). Figure 13.11. The File Attachment Properties dialog opens after you attach a file.
5.	Click General and type a description of the file attachment in the Description field. Click Close to exit the dialog.
6.	Click the Attachments tab to open the Attachments pane.
7.	At the lower left and below the Attachments pane (Figure 13.12), you can see an Attachment icon. If you click the icon, the Document Status dialog opens. 8.	Save the file.

The PDF file is ready to send to your recipients. When you email the PDF document, the embedded file attachment travels with the host PDF file.

Are there any file types I cannot attach to PDFs?

All Windows application files (.exe) and all .zip compressed files cannot be attached to PDF documents because they are among the most likely file types that can carry a virus. To prevent virus infection on computers, Adobe has eliminated these files from the acceptable file types you can attach to PDFs. As of this writing any other file type can be attached to PDFs.
