76 Removing Irregular Pops and Clicks in Audition

#76 Removing Irregular Pops and Clicks in Audition

Playing Favorites

Remove Transient is one of four effects that Adobe has placed in the Favorites menu by default because it's one of Audition's most frequently used features. If you find yourself using other Audition effects often enough that you'd rather not have to sort through Audition's extensive effects lists each time to find them, you can add them to the Favorites panel. Choose Favorites > Edit Favorites, and click the New button. Then select them from the lengthy Audition Effects drop-down menu, type a name under Properties, and click Save.

The Repair Transient filter removes pops and clicksi.e., noises that are transient, rather than persistent, like those we addressed with the Noise Reduction effect (#75)from a range of sources. Typical transient noises may arise from clicking a camera setting during shooting or accidentally kicking the tripod (in which case a pop or click in the audio may be the least of your troubles). Unlike some programs that completely mute the audio track for the selected period, Audition retains more of the background audio, which sounds much better. Here's how to apply the filter:

1.

In the Zoom panel, click the Zoom In Horizontally icon (Figure 76a) to zoom in until the transient noise is clearly viewable in the waveform.

Figure 76a. Use these tools in the Zoom panel to isolate the transient noise.

2.

Click and drag your pointer to select only the transient noise (Figure 76b). After selecting the region, click Play in the Transport panel to make sure that the region contains only that noise.

Figure 76b. Click and drag to select the transient noise in the waveform.

3.

Choose Favorites > Repair Transient. There are no configurable controls, so the dialog box shown in Figure 76c will appear briefly, then close.

Figure 76c. Here's the screen you should see flash before your eyes while Audition is removing the transient noise.

You should see a significant change in the waveform, as shown in Figure 76d.
