Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTPS)

This is a secure version of HTTP used on the internet. It uses SSL to secure provide security for data that is passed over it. The NFuse Web pages should be configured to use HTTPS in order to guarantee that the user credentials are encrypted when they are passed from the client browser to the Web server.

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)

SSL is an open, non-proprietary, industry standard Web protocol designed to provide secure server authentication, data encryption, message integrity, and optional client authentication. By combining the SSL technology with HTML, HTTPS was created. SSL and therefore HTTPS use the TCP port 443 by default for its communications.

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Relay

This works much the same as the SSL technology enabled between a Web server and a Web browser, except that now the secure tunnel is being passed between the Web server and a Citrix server farm. SSL Relay is a default component of Citrix MetaFrame XP for Windows 1.0 and Citrix MetaFrame 1.8 with SP2 with FR1 licensed and activated. By default, the SSL Relay used TCP port 443 for its SSL communication.

Security Log

This contains events that are generated when auditing has been implemented. Auditing can be enabled on events such as logons, resources or file access. The two types of Security Log events are Success Audit events (providing information on successful logins or access) and Failed events (providing information on failed login attempts, failed access to resources, or other security threats).

Server-to-server communication

Within MetaFrame XP, server-to-server communication is accomplished by utilizing TCP port 2512. Each server uses a direct channel to other servers as required via this single port. As compared to MetaFrame 1.8 using UDP port 1604, this new architecture provides a much more reliable and scalable solution.

Shadow

Allows the administrator to view and remote control a user's session from their desktop. Be aware that shadowing has limitations. If your server is configured to ask permission from the user in the ICA session before shadowing can commence. Additionally, the client device you are shadowing from must be capable of supporting the video resolution of the ICA session or shadowing will terminate.

Shadowing

Shadowing is the ability to remotely control a user session. This capability allows administrators to manage and troubleshoot user sessions thereby providing further functionality to this multiuser environment. This service allows administrators to interact directly with users sessions including providing keyboard and mouse input into the MetaFrame XP session simultaneously with the user. Used commonly for training exercises, user monitoring, and troubleshooting; this adds to the administrators arsenal of tools when using Citrix MetaFrame XP.

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)

A standard for managing hardware devices connected to a network, approved for UNIX use, which lets administrators know, for example, when a printer has a paper jam or is low on toner.

Simultaneous installations

An issue facing administrators when completing multiple installations of Citrix MetaFrame XP is the ability to perform simultaneous installations. Although this can be done successfully, there are a few guidelines that must be followed to minimize issues they may arise. As servers are installed, the must all communicate with the data store to properly complete the implementation process. When multiple servers access the same data locations within the data store, timeouts can occur. Proper planning for these types of issues can immediately resolve most problems before they occur.

Single farm

The most common implementation of Citrix MetaFrame XP is using a single server farm. Single farms can be used in small business to large enterprises due to the increased scalability and reliability. Factors such as database performance, hardware platforms, and network connectivity all play a role in deciding upon using a single farm.

Sound support:

Win32 client sound support allows users with a compatible sound card to play sound files on the server and hear them through their local computer sound system. The sound files can be compressed to meet bandwidth requirements for the network. Sound support can be managed on the client side from the settings of the application set.

Speed Screen 3

This enhances the feel of responsiveness of an application and further reduces bandwidth usage. SpeedScreen 3 shows significant measurable improvement over previous versions. SpeedScreen 3 provides the user with an immediate change in the cursor to inform the user the action is pending. SpeedScreen 3 enables users to receive almost instantaneous responses to mouse movements and keystrokes. SpeedScreen can also be customized by using the Latency Reduction Manager from the Citrix | MetaFrame XP program group.

Speed Screen Latency Reduction Manager

Use the SpeedScreen Latency Reduction Manager to customize SpeedScreen settings for a MetaFrame XP server, individual published applications, and input controls within applications. You can save a SpeedScreen configuration file and then deploy the file across your server farm. With SpeedScreen Latency Reduction Manager, you can configure local text echo settings for individual input fields within an application. SpeedScreen Latency Reduction settings can be applied to servers, applications, and input fields of a specified application.

Subscription advantage

Citrix provides a service known as Subscription Advantage, of which clients meeting defined criteria defined receive free upgrade licenses to MetaFrame XP. Additional information related to these licenses can be found at the Citrix web site.

Symmetric Key encryption

This is a little different. It uses the same key to both encrypt and decrypt the message we are sending. While this encryption method is generally faster than Public key-Private Key, it also depends on the symmetric key remaining totally secure and never being compromised. This means that the Symmetric Key must be sent over a secure channel or hand delivered to the parties involved in the communication.

System Information Tool

This contains vital information relating to your server in a read-only format. It cannot be used to test or change server hardware or software only to display the server's configuration and components. Information contained in the folders can be saved as a text or .inf file and kept as historical data or e-mailed to a vendor's technical support.

System Summary

This displays a list of the system's basic configuration. This is where you'll find, among other things, the version and build of your operating system, the BIOS version installed memory, available memory, virtual memory, available virtual memory and page file size.
