Applying Audio Filters

 < Day Day Up >

Applying filters to the audio portion of a clip is very similar to the way you apply video filters: you drag the filter from the Audio Filters bin in the Effects tab or select the clip and choose an option from the Effects menu. You can use an audio filter to help improve overall audio quality or to create a special effect such as an echo. You can also add a corrective filter to remove a specific sound.

1.

Close the Tool Bench window, and open the Motion with Filters sequence from the Browser, if it's not already open from the previous Project Practice. Listen to the MB wins clip of the announcer speaking over the PA system.

An audio filter added to this clip could make the announcer sound like he's in a large stadium.

2.

Double-click the MB wins clip to open it in the Viewer.

3.

Click the Filters tab, and choose Effects > Audio Filters > Final Cut Pro > Reverberation.

TIP

Applying an audio filter to this clip may produce a red audio render line in the Timeline ruler area. If this occurs, open the User Preferences and, in the General tab, change the Real-time Audio Mixing to 12 tracks. If the red line is still present, render the clip.

The Reverberation filter is displayed under the Stereo 1 Filters heading in the Filters tab. The filter has four parameters. You will use the default settings.

4.

Play the MB wins audio clip in the Timeline.

The default Reverberation filter makes the announcer sound like he's larger than life.

5.

In the Browser, click the Effects tab, and click the Audio Filters triangle to display its contents. Display the contents of the Final Cut Pro folder.

The audio filter icon is a speaker with a filter overlay covering it.

6.

To make the narrator sound like he's speaking to a crowd, drag the Echo filter to the MB wins audio clip.

When you drag the Echo filter onto the audio tracks of this clip, the audio tracks become outlined, just as they do when you drag a video filter to a clip.

7.

Before playing the clip, deselect the enable check box next to the Reverberation filter so you will hear how only the Echo filter sounds. Play the clip in the Timeline. Then play the clip with both filters active.

These audio filters add an effect to create an entirely different sound, however, other audio filters, such as 3 Band Equalizer, just change the equalization (EQ) of a clip.

8.

Close all open sequences in the Timeline, and press Cmd-S to save your changes.
