Learn From Your Mistakes

 < Day Day Up >

Okay, now that you have realized that you are responsible for some portion of the Oracle E-Business Suite management, you have landed the job, been assigned to the task, or lived through go live, you can take one last piece of advice to heart going forward: learn from your experiences and learn from your mistakes.

Six months or a year from now (it is hard to tell exactly when), you may be in the position of bringing on more modules to the system, implementing more pieces or some auxiliary add-ons. If you have taken away anything from your experience in getting you to this point in your career, remember your experiences when looking at the next project, looking at ongoing maintenance, or just looking at making it through your job.

Do not try to be in a hurry to get something implemented. Do not pick a company just because it was able to meet the price you quoted and is willing to take on your project. Do not think that if you have had a less than rewarding experience with one contracting company that you had the only one and that you could never be that unlucky again.

Take the time to compare many proposals. It will be worth your time.

Take the time to check references and check the references' references. Make sure that the referenced companies exist and they are not just someone's brothers-in-law trying to help them land the job. There are a lot of people out of jobs and competition is high. Make sure that you cover all of your bases and do not take anything for granted. A company can put up a Web site in a couple days. Make sure that they can provide what it is you really need.
