Lights-Out devices can be connected directly to a corporate network, which allows the device to be accessed from any location on the network. In addition, this configuration reduces the amount of networking hardware and infrastructure required to support Lights-Out devices. Figure 17-6 shows a configuration typical of a nondedicated management network. Figure 17-6. Nondedicated management network configuration. Some corporate networks operate at 1000Mb/s. Lights-Out devices only support 10/100 speeds. Performance problems can result if you attach a Lights-Out device to a gigabit-only switch port. A separate, dedicated, network for Lights-Out devices, as shown in Figure 17-7, not only addresses potential performance problems, but also improves security. This configuration enables you to physically control which clients are connected to the management network. Figure 17-7. Dedicated management network configuration. |
