Chapter Summary

The Connector for Lotus Notes supports e-mail transfer and directory synchronization between a Lotus Domino/Notes network and an Exchange 2000 Server organization. This is the basis for reliable messaging connectivity and migration from Lotus Domino/Notes to Exchange 2000 Server. Mixed-mode organizations may also route calendar queries through this connector if they run a Calendar Connector instance on Exchange Server 5.5 machines.

The Connector for Lotus Notes is an EDK-based gateway that requires a Lotus Notes client to access a Lotus Notes or Domino server. This client must be installed locally on the Connector server. You also need to prepare the Domino/Notes environment before you can start the Connector. A Connector ID and special databases are required, as well as a foreign domain document for the Exchange 2000 organization. Beyond this, you also need to grant the Connector ID Access permissions on Notes databases, such as the mail router database MAIL.BOX. For directory synchronization, access is required to source and target name and address books. The Connector ID itself should not be included in directory synchronization.

The connector components involved in message transfer and directory synchronization are: MEXNTS, MEXOUT, NTSMEX, MEXIN, DXAMEX, and DXANOTES. MEXOUT and MEXNTS take care of outbound messages from Exchange 2000 Server to Lotus Domino/Notes. In the other direction, NTSMEX and MEXIN are the team for message transfer and conversion. DXAMEX and DXANOTES handle the directory synchronization jointly.
