Saving the Selection

 < Day Day Up >

With the Magic Wand tool, you were able to select the gray background surrounding the candy. If you have spent a great deal of time making your selection, you might want to save that selection so you can use it later. Once it's deselected, it is gone. But what if you want the candy selected and not the background? Since you still have the background area selected, it is a simple step to reverse the selection and get everything (the candy in this case) other than the background.

1.

Choose Select > Select Inverse.

Now the selection is only around the candy. Any modifications to the image will now affect only the candy.

2.

Choose Select > Save Bitmap Selection. Type candy for the selection name and then click OK.

With the selection around the candy saved, you can later restore that selection if you need to use it again. You'll restore the selection later in this lesson.

3.

Choose Select > Deselect to remove the selection.

If you still have the Magic Wand tool selected, you are still in bitmap mode, but nothing is selected.
