A.10 Other Software Updates

Locations for getting the latest versions of some independently maintained software are discussed here.

A.10.1 Downloading Sendmail

The various distributors of Linux are good about integrating new versions of sendmail into their new distributions. This was particularly true as we closed out the 1990s because of enhancements to sendmail limiting spam and ending unauthorized relaying by spammers, and because of fixes to security bugs. To get an update to a Linux distribution see "Vendor Software and Updates" on page 750 in this Appendix and look under the distribution name.

To get the very latest version of sendmail there are two noncommercial Internet sites that provide useful information on sendmail.

Additionally, there is a commercial company founded by sendmail creator Eric Allman himself that also maintains an open-source version of sendmail. Additionally, it offers commercial support for sendmail. Although I have found the sendmail source code to be reasonably easy to work with (and easier than most of the UNIX utility programs), and even fixing a bug causing it to core dump only took me a few hours, it is very reassuring to have access to support by the program's creator.

A.10.2 PostgreSQL Database

Postgres is a database system developed at the University of California, Berkeley after the team headed by Professor Stonebraker completed Ingres. It is the only public domain database to offer a native SQL interface at this time. It was intended to be an experimental system to incorporate some object-oriented database concepts without throwing away the relational database model. Although intended originally as an experimental research project it is a fully functional "ready for prime time" system.

PostgresSQL, an enhancement of Postgres, was voted the number one database at Linux World 1999. RPMs for PostgreSQL 6.5.2 were shipped with Red Hat 6.1. For all the details on PostgreSQL, including how to download it for free, do visit this site.

A.10.3 Open-Source Repositories

The University of North Carolina has a wonderful repository of Linux distributions and other open sources called ibiblio metalab, formerly metalab and sunsite, (and very well known) at

ftp://ibiblio.org

Their directory for Secure SHell (SSH) is

ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/packages/security/ssh/
