20.2 Tracing a Numeric IP Address with dig

Although nslookup gives you the system name and related information, that's a fair amount of typing, and writing a script to reverse the order of bytes would be annoying. The dig command can do this with less effort by using the -x flag. Try the following:

 
 dig -x 192.9.25.4 

The useful part of the response follows:

 
 ;; ANSWERS: 4.25.9.192.in-addr.arpa.  86400  PTR  pluto.Sun.COM.
