Thorough requirements derivation is very interesting to me, but something that is generally rushed through by most project managers. This is a terrible mistake. I once worked for a gentleman who subsequently rose to an impressive level of success and notoriety in a major corporation. He told me that the secret to project management is to steer the stampeding herd in the preferred direction, then slow it down before getting everyone moving forward in single file. How true that is. Approaching the requirements phase as outlined in this chapter has many benefits, not the least of which is getting that project stampede heading toward the right finish line!
