Backing Up and Restoring Directory Data

team lib

Restoring Active Directory from a backup requires one important item: a timely backup of the system. Without a recent backup of the system when it was functioning normally, you can't restore Active Directory - just as you can't build a brick wall if you don't have any bricks . The only way this solution can be employed is to prepare for it.

Preparing to restore Active Directory from a backup requires that you have a complete backup of your entire system. That means creating a backup using Backup Wizard and selecting Back Up Everything on My Computer (see Chapter 17).

When you have a backup, restoring the system is not difficult. Just follow these steps:

  1. Reinstall Windows Server 2003.

Be sure to install the system using the same partition and root directory names as before.

  2. Use the Backup tool to restore all data from the backup set back to its original locations.

  3. After restoration is complete, reboot the system.

Windows 2003 automatically realizes that it's been restored from a backup and rebuilds the Active Directory database.

That's it. As you can see, your only real tool for repairing a severely damaged system is a recent and complete backup. As we stress in Chapter 17, you need to implement a regular, regimented backup procedure to protect your data (and your job).

If you would like more information on dealing with Active Directory problems, consult the Windows 2003 Help and Support Center (as described earlier in this chapter), the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit, and TechNet (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/).
