It's all well and good to have your photos in your computer so that you can browse them in iPhoto and show them off in slideshows. But something is missing from digital photography: the ability to hold a physical photograph in your hands, turn it around in the light, and look at it along with a stack of other photos you hold in your hand while you sit with a loved one on the couch .

You might be one of those lucky souls who owns a photographic printer, one that can print digital images directly onto heavy photo paper. But even if you're not, you can make printouts of your photos that do a reasonably good job of re-creating the experience of physical photographs, without having to order any professional prints. All you need is a good inkjet or laser printer, preferably with color capability. iPhoto does the rest.

1.
Select Photos to Print

Select a photo album or a group of photos in the Photo Library . If you don't select any photos, all the photos in the current view are printed. To select multiple photos, press or Shift while clicking photo thumbnails .

2.
Click Print Button

Click the Print button at the bottom of the iPhoto window. The Print setup sheet opens, in which you define how you want your photos to be printed.

3.
Arrange Photos on Page

iPhoto provides a number of useful ways to print your photos, all accessible using the Style drop-down list in the Print sheet:

  • Contact Sheet . Prints all the selected photos in a grid in thumbnail form. A slider lets you select how many photos are shown on a single page, and thus how many pages iPhoto has to print.

  • Full Page . Uses the entire 8.5"x11" sheet size to print a single photo. A slider lets you define how wide the margins should be.

  • Greeting Card . Prints each photo on a single page, using half the sheet so that the page can be folded over and a message written on the inside.

    NOTE

iPhoto automatically rotates each photo to maximize the useful space on the page. For instance, in N-Up mode, all photos are printed in either horizontal or vertical orientation, depending on how they fit best.

  • N-Up . Lets you print a certain number of photos on each page. You can select anything from 2 to 16 photos per page, as well as whether iPhoto should print One photo per page in other words, if there are six photos printed on each page, iPhoto will print six copies of the first photo on the first page, then six copies of the second photo on the second page, and so on.

  • Sampler . Prints multiple photos on each page, in varying sizes according to which of two templates you select. You can also choose the One photo per page option with this mode.

  • Standard Prints . Lets you select a standard print size, such as 4x6 inches or 8x10 inches, and prints the photos to match those sizes. Unless you select the One photo per page check box, iPhoto prints the photos using as little paper as possible. Standard Prints mode is especially useful if you have a photo printer.

Select the printing options that match your needs. You can click the Preview button in the Print dialog box to open the sequence of printed pages in Preview.

4.
Print the Photos

Click the Print button in the Print sheet or in the Preview window, and the print job will start.
