Evaluating progress

Purpose

To evaluate how close the coachee is to achieving his or her coaching objectives.

Resources

This will take 20 “30 minutes. You will need a list of the coaching objectives, pens and paper.

Notes to the coach

This is an activity which could be done prior to a coaching meeting or during it. The idea is to get the coachee s evaluation of how near he or she is to achieving each of the coaching objectives, which will help measure progress as well as inform a revision of the coaching plan if necessary. It is important that you allow the coachee to complete this without input from you as it should be his or her assessment of the progress, not yours. If you want to, you could undertake a similar review at the same time and compare your views with the coachee s.

Instructions

Provide the coachee with a list of the coaching objectives, plus the following three questions (if you want to, you could create this into a questionnaire or table format):

  • How close to achieving each objective are you?

  • What else do you need to do to fully achieve each objective?

  • What actions do you intend to take now in order to ensure that you achieve each objective?

Discuss the evaluation with the coachee and amend the action plan as appropriate. You may also want to encourage the coachee to discuss progress with his or her line manager or any other stakeholders.
