6.5 Chapter Summary

This chapter started with the mechanics surrounding managing a network through the use of SNMP. The operation and history of SNMP were discussed briefly with a focus on how SNMP accomplishes the managing of a network element. Then, some of the unique features surrounding SNMP in a Juniper Networks router and how to configure a router properly were examined.

This chapter also covered securing the router through the use of firewall filters. As you recall, this is the Juniper Networks terminology for ACLs and packet filtering. Through the use of a firewall filter, how to configure a router and deploy some of the advanced features was demonstrated. Some examples of how to secure a Juniper Networks router using them were provided as well. Additionally, the use of firewall filters also provides the ability to conduct rate limiting and traffic policing.

Many networks are now using and actively deploying accounting as a means to track traffic more efficiently . This tracking could result in a bill for a customer or can allow for the monitoring of a circuit to an upstream provider to ensure it is billing your network correctly.
