14.6 Chapter Summary

This chapter introduced and discussed the more important aspects of multicast. It provided an overview of the most popular and widely implemented multicast routing protocols both currently and historically. This chapter discussed and compared the differences between PIM-DM and PIM-SM, as well as looking at how multicast evolved through DVMRP.

While comparing and contrasting the differences between their modes of operation, each of the protocols was covered with a focus on the method of configuring it on a Juniper Networks router. The needs of multicast to be distributed properly between different ASs through the use of MSDP and MBGP were also examined.

This chapter was an introduction to multicast and its brief entry into the world of multicast. Additional information on multicast and Juniper Networks can be found in Brian Edwards and Leonard A. Giuliano's Interdomain Multicast Routing: Practical Juniper Networks and Cisco Systems Solutions , my favorite in the Juniper Networks documentation.
