Chapter 14
Software Maintenance
About This Chapter
To keep a network secure, you must ensure that clients and servers have the latest updates to the installed operating system. Microsoft Windows 2000 Server includes a number of ways to accomplish this, including service packs, hotfixes, automatic updates, and Group Policy features. In this chapter, you will learn about the various tools you can use to update client and server computers.
Be sure you know how to configure and use all of the service pack, hotfix, and update tools for Microsoft Windows 2000. You also need to know how to perform updates on computers that are not connected to the Internet.
Before You Begin
To complete the exercises in this chapter, you will need
A domain controller for the domain.fabrikam.com domain
A member server in the domain
An Internet connection for obtaining software updates
You also need a Windows 2000 Server computer to install Remote Installation Services (RIS). This can be the domain controller. However, you will need an NTFS file system volume on this computer, separate from the system volume, with about 1 GB of storage space.
