This chapter looked at two ways PHP can query a database: using ODBC or directly. We explored both methods and developed PHP code to connect to and query a database. Using the ODBC method, we looked at how to use a Microsoft Access database and the PHP ODBC functions together. Using the direct method, we looked at the various PHP functions for working with SQL Server, Oracle, and MySQL. Chapter 10, "PHP and ADO," further explores how to use PHP and databases together. But first we will explore the relationship between PHP and COM and the emerging .NET framework in the next chapter.
