The development of a book like this typically goes through two phases. The first phase starts many months before the product we describe—in this case, Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional—is due to ship. Though the work is done at a relatively leisurely pace, it's a frustrating time because of the lack of accurate information, the uncertainty of schedules, the difficulty of getting motivated to work using information that is probably going to change later in the project—and the certainty that the second phase will come at the most inopportune time. The second phase, of course, is one of frenetic activity: furious rewriting and rechecking everything against the latest versions of the software, juggling tables of contents, and getting everything typeset and indexed in the shortest possible time.

Throughout both phases, we've been blessed with excellent support from our friends at Microsoft Press and Publishing.com. Acquisitions editor Christey Bahn and content manager Barbara Ellsworth got us started in the right directions. Project editor Sandra Haynes kept things on track and helped us keep pace with ever-changing schedules. Manuscript editor Chrisa Hotchkiss made sure that our subjects and verbs remained mutually agreeable. Page layout artist Lisa Bravo produced the attractive pages you are about to read, and proofreader Andrea Fox double-checked everyone's work, making sure the pages you read are free from errors. Project manager and technical editor Curt Philips admirably performed the awesome task of bringing it all together—and making sure it was right. They all gracefully tolerated the tirades of an imperious author (we won't say which one) and helped us put together a book we're proud of. For that we're grateful.
