Chapter 4
The desktop is the backdrop to everything you do in Microsoft Windows. It's the surface on which you run programs, a place where you can store documents and shortcuts, and, potentially, a kind of menu from which you can launch programs, open documents, and visit Web sites.
When you first install Windows, the Setup program provides a standard configuration for your desktop. You get a decent color arrangement, a serviceable screen resolution, appropriately sized buttons and icons, and so on. But because one size does not fit all, Windows gives you many choices about the appearance and behavior of your desktop. We'll explore those choices in this chapter.
