It's a good idea to practice lining up the pen with on-screen elements. For example, when you hold the pen over one of the Start menu choices, the pen tip and arrow cursor are in close alignment. From some other positions, however, the alignment can vary.
In fact, as you move toward the outer edges of a Tablet PC screen, the pen tip and cursor tip move slightly apart. You think you're pointing at, say, a Close button - but when you tap, nothing happens. So here's a hot tip about pen tips. . . .
To access the Start menu, follow these steps:
Place the pen so it rests over the screen but isn't touching it.
A selection cursor (a white arrow) appears.
Move the cursor until it is over the Windows Start menu button.
Tap the Start button with the pen tip.
Move the pointer around the Start menu (still without touching the screen).
Different items on the menu are highlighted as the pointer passes over them (as shown in Figure 4-3).
Figure 4-3: Even if the pen isn't touching the screen, selections are highlighted and the selection cursor appears.
Remember The submenus don't open when you move the cursor over them - but if you keep the cursor on the selection for a short time, they appear after a few moments.
