10.4 Spectral Compatibility via Method of Signal Power Limitations (Method A)

As mentioned earlier, determination of spectral compatibility per Method A is simply to show that the signal to be transmitted in the cable falls within the signal power limitations for the corresponding deployment guidelines. Following are the aspects specified for use of Method A.

  • Power Spectral Density (PSD) ” The PSD defines the distribution of signal power as a function frequency. The units of PSD are typically in dBm/Hz or in W/Hz.

  • Transmit Signal Power ” Defines the total signal power measured across the full bandwidth of the signal. The units are typically expressed in dBm.

  • Deployment Guidelines ” Typically defines the maximum loop reach or distance a specific signal or technology may be deployed and be declared spectrally compatible with the basis systems. As the loop length increases , the greater signal attenuation makes the victim DSL more susceptible to crosstalk. Thus, most systems will harm a basis system beyond some distance.

  • Transverse balance

  • Longitudinal output voltage.

Hence with method A, by knowing the signal's maximum transmit power and PSD, spectral compatibility within specific deployment guidelines may be easily determined.
