Data Security

The type of data security policy you establish depends on how important the data is. Private data, such as personal information in Human Resources, will need very tight security. Test tables probably will need very little security. Another way to look at this is: What is the impact if the data is lost? If the data is used by many areas in a production environment, you will have to take the necessary steps to protect it. If it is used by one individual only as a "sandbox," then your security doesn't have to be so tight.

As you will see, there are a couple of standard ways of implementing data security: privileges and roles. We'll discuss privileges and roles later in this chapter.
