Lab Exercises

Required equipment : working system with Internet connection, printer with driver CD or floppy disk, internal hardware to install, and driver CD or floppy disk

Printer Installation and Configuration

Objectives : Learn how to install and configure the printer.

  1. Read the documentation for installing the printer.

  2. Install the printer per instructions.

  3. Run a test print. What does the test print tell you about the printer?

  4. Send a couple of print jobs to the printer and open the print spooler. Cancel the second print job.

  5. Open the printer Properties sheet and go through the tabs. If the printer is an inkjet printer, which tab(s) do you use to select paper type and print settings (such as photo quality)? If the printer is a laser or LED printer, which tab lets you see the onboard memory?

Card Installation and Configuration

Objective : Learn how to install an add-on card and view its configuration and driver information.

  1. Read the documentation for installing the card.

  2. Install the card per instructions.

  3. Open the Windows Device Manager or NTDIAG (with Windows NT 4.0). What hardware resources does the card use? Are there any conflicts?

  4. If there are any problems with the device, note the Device Manager error code. What was the code (if any)?

  5. Before resolving any problems with the device, run System Information (if available). Does the card show up in the Problem Device category?

  6. Use System Information to determine the answers to these questions:

    1. What version of Windows does the system use?

    2. Where and what size is the swapfile or pagefile?

    3. Are there any hardware conflicts on the system?

Checking for Digital Signatures (Windows Me/2000/XP)

Objective : Determine if system and driver files are digitally signed and correct any problems.

  1. Run Sigverif in Advanced mode to check for unsigned system or driver files.

  2. If any unsigned system files are discovered , run SFC to repair them with Windows 2000/XP. Have your Windows CD available (Windows Me is designed to automatically protect these files).

  3. If any unsigned driver files are discovered, start Device Manager, inspect the properties for one or two of these devices, and use Update Driver (if available) or use Windows Update to see if signed drivers are available.

Answers to Practice Test

A1:

Answer A (install Windows File and Print Sharing on the computer with the printer) will get your client printing remotely in a hurry. There's no reason to install this service on any computer that doesn't have resources it plans to share with others. The printer icon changes automatically depending upon the type of printer configuration in use.

A2:

You need two answersA (open the Ports dialog and select the USB port for the printer) and B (install USB drivers for the printer) to make the move to USB printing. It's likely that installing USB drivers for the printer will also change the ports dialog for you.

A3:

Answer C (advanced) is the one you want to prevent moonlighting employees from creating unauthorized letterheads, posters , and who knows what else. Scheduling was used by Windows NT 4.0.

A4:

It can be tricky to locate the utility menu, but answer C (advanced) is the right way to get started.

A5:

Answer C is the simplest and the correct answer. The HP LaserJet and Epson printers use completely different printer languages and any attempt to use the Epson to output print jobs intended for a laser printer will result in a lot of garbage output.

A6:

If you answered B (hard disk), C (CD-ROM), and D (floppy disk), give yourself a gold star. Windows Update won't work without an Internet connection.

A7:

Answer A (select nonconflicting resources for the device or the other device that conflicts with it) is what you need to do. Click the Troubleshoot button if your version of Windows has it to get started.

A8:

Just one of these answers is a true one-stop shop, and that is answer B (System Information).

A9:

Answer B (forced hardware) is the answer you want. You can use this method of configuration if the Resources tab lets you change settings or use a different "setting based on" option.

A10:

Try answer D (system file checker) to fix any damage from dumping old software on your system.

A11:

Answer D (Msinfo32) is the one to choose on most versions of Windows. If you type Winmsd (which was used for System Information in Windows NT 4.0), in Windows 2000/XP it also runs System Information. MSD was used for system information in the days of Windows 3.1 and MS-DOS. Dxdiag shows some of the same information as Msinfo32. MSConfig is what you use to adjust startup programs.
