Summary

After you run through the initial configuration of your NSP, you will need to begin basic system configuration so that your NSP is usable. The remote administration GUI provided with the Nokia device is the network Voyager configuration tool. You connect to Voyager through a Web browser via HTTP, and the first thing you should do is to set up the network properties for your gateway. Start by configuring the interfaces with IP addresses, link speed, and duplex settings using the Interface Configuration screen. Then you might want to set up the default gateway on the system using the Static Routes configuration screen.

A few other basic system settings include the system date, time, and time zone, which can be configured using the Local Time Setup link under the System Configuration heading on the main Configuration screen, or you can synchronize with an NTP server via the NTP link. Do you want to be able to resolve Internet addresses from your Nokia? Then you need to configure name servers on the DNS configuration page. You also need to click the Host Address Assignment link to set up a host entry for the firewall's external IP address. This is particularly important if your Nokia will be running Check Point FireWall-1 software. You should configure your system to notify you if something is wrong. To accomplish this task, enter a mail server IP address under the Mail Relay link and enable the System Event Notification option.

Next, you will be concerned with securing the Nokia platform. Luckily, Nokia ships its products with security in mind. Most network protocols are already disabled, and the ones that are open by default have encryption alternatives, such as HTTPS instead of HTTP, SSH instead of Telnet, and SCP instead of FTP. The configuration parameters necessary to perform these substitutions were explained step by step in this chapter, allowing you to make your system as secure as possible from the start.

Finally, there is a large variety of configuration options available to you through Voyager's main Configuration screen. You have various tools under Interface Configuration, System Configuration, SNMP, IPv6, Reboot, Shutdown System, Security and Access Configuration, Fault Management Configuration, Routing Configuration, Traffic Management, Router Services, Asset Management, Licenses, Show Configuration Summary, and Copyright Information at your disposal in one location within Voyager.
